Leeds United Deadline Day News-Last Updated 18:00pm

Posted on 31 August 2010 by paul

10:20 - Reports emerging from Sky Sports that Leeds and Manchester City have agreed a fee for young midfielder Adam Clayton.

10:30 – Rumours emerging that Watford midfielder John Eustace could undergo a medical at Leeds United today after supposedly agreeing personal terms… Suppose you should never trust rumour sites that some sad person has put up!

10:37 – United linked with Rangers frontman Kyle Lafferty with a reported fee of 1.5mil-3mil. Come on, can you see Ken Bates wanting to go through more open wallet surgery? Besides, we have enough strikers as it is!

11:30 – Rumour circulating that Luciano Becchio could be on his way to Blackburn Rovers. He was allegedly spotted outside Ewood Park earlier today. Sounds like nonsense, why would he want to move backwards in his career and go to a smaller club?!

11:52 First Signing – The official Leeds United site has confirmed the signing of Ramon Nunez, who has been on trial with the club for the past month. No details about contract length have yet been released.

12:13 - Ex McBoro and Arsenal striker Jéremie Aliadiere has apparently been spotted at Elland Road… But rumour has it that if he doesn’t get a contract with Leeds, he’s heading to Subway next to see if there are any jobs going!

12:17 – BBC Sport’s Transfer Feed has us linked with young Manchester City defender Dedryck Boyata. Apparently Norwich are leading the race for him, but us and the toon are keeping tabs on him.

13:00 - Leeds are set to make a decision on Calum Davenport before today’s 6pm Deadline… Rumour Mill once again!

13:16 - Jason Roberts set to sign on the dotted line at Elland Road according to the Guardian and Betfair should his move to Wigan fall through, do we really need another striker, a defender would actually be nice!

13:40 - Defender Lubomir Michalik has signed a loan deal until 3rd January 2011 with Carlise United. THANK GOD, well done Carlisle for signing for taking that useless idiot off our hands, good luck with your defence for the next 6 months!

14:16 - Simon Grayson confirms that Leeds have agreed a fee with Manchester City for midfielder Adam Clayton in an interview with Yorkshire Radio

14:17 - Simon Grayson confirms he expects to see one or two more to leave Elland Road (most likely to be Andy Robinson and Alan Sheehan) and also confirms he is in contract talks with Clayton, and interested in one other player, which he claims would be the icing on the cake for his squad. Stick around here for all the breaking Leeds United news.

14:38Yorkshire Radio presenter, Thom Kirwin casts doubts over Becchio transfer after confirming the striker was training with the Leeds team this morning. This quashes earlier rumours that he was at Ewood Park (unless he has a body double?) UPDATE: Turns out that it was Michael Salgado that was spotted, not Becchio! Oh Dear the man who reported that it was Becchio!

15:36 - Rumours are emerging that Simon grayson’s ‘icing on the cake’ signing could be Newcastle midfielder Alan Smith… Lets face it, this one actually is possible!

15:51 – Calum Davenport could reject a contract offer from Leeds and sign a contract with Cardiff City, as free transfers can still go through after the 6pm deadline. If he went there, he’d need his head testing quite frankly!

16:05 - The deadline is getting ever closer, and were still waiting on the Clayton deal. More rumours emerging about Grayson’s possible ‘icing on the cake’ signing, and they’re starting to get a bit ludicrous, I mean come on, Leeds aren’t going to sign Roque Santa Cruz and Michael Salgado on loan!

16:09 – Michael Tonge could complete a loan move to Leeds from Stoke City before the deadline at 6pm

17:07 – Well less than an hour to go now, and it doesn’t look as though any more signings are going to be happening apart from the Clayton move. No more news on this ‘icing on the cake’ signing that Grayson has been talking about, but there is still the loan market to come, so signings wise, it might not be over just yet!

17:10 Second Signing - Machester City have confirmed that Adam Clayton has signed a permanent deal with Leeds United. More to follow on the story.

17:19 - Still no confirmation from Leeds United on the Adam Clayton signing, THERES ONLY 41 MINUTES LEFT, HURRY UP LEEDS!!!

17:30 - Half an hour now, Clayton signed, but I still have a feeling another player might sign that slipped under the radar as per usual. Keep reading for all the latest Leeds United transfer news.

17:47 – Alan Sheehan has been released by Leeds United, and given the chance to join Swindon Town. Thats another Leeds reject for Swindon! How many more ex-Leeds players do they need? They’re getting as bad as Boro with Scottish players… Mind you, that isn’t really possible!

18:00 – The transfer window is finally shut… Thank God, I can rest now!!!

LUFC: Ten things we’ve learnt this week #2

Posted on 22 August 2010 by paul

Taken from ‘The Scratching Shed’

#01 – Betfair love The Scratching Shed

After a summer of fruitless transfer speculation and some heavy criticism from The Scratching Shed, Betfair retorted with a plea of love to Leeds fans. The less than subtle response to some of TSS’ criticism didn’t go unnoticed and TSS responded via Twitter, with Betfair explaining that they’re “very sensitive to criticism from [their] favourite Leeds United blog”.

Bless ‘em! We love you too Betfair!

#02 – Our away support is second to none

4,000 Whites fans out-sang 21,000 Forest fans on Sunday as the Leeds faithful enjoyed their first away trip of the season. According to this guide on a Nottingham Forest fans site, it wasn’t because our support is simply immense, but because we had the “best acoustics!”

Or maybe it was the fact that only 17 of their fans actually made any noise. Were they only there to watch the Leeds?

#03 – Clough and Revie deadlocked

Neither the ghost of Brian Clough or Don Revie could claim bragging rights as the battle between their former clubs remained deadlocked. Revie’s fans were sure to inform Clough’s lot that they thought he was a bit of “w**ker”, so at least we can claim victory there!

#04 – Becchio needs a new contract!

Fresh rumours – Betfair, again! – linking Becchio with a £750k move to Celtic had the Leeds fans a little panicked this week as his contract talks remained unresolved. With Darius Vassell being linked as a replacement, Kenneth better start digging deep.

#05 – Grayson bottled defensive decision.

No surprise to see Richard Naylor starting in the centre of defence as Larry bottled it and decided not to hand Alex Bruce his full debut. This risky decision looked like it was going to backfire horribly as Forest cut through our static defence with terrifying ease for twenty minutes. Luckily, they started lumping the ball up at our back line, and we started playing football, allowing us to claim a point.

#06 – You Watt? You Watt?

Stamped on, and investigated? Conspiracy theories abounded – would we be docked points? Would Watt get banned too? In the end Gunter received a fair 3 match ban, and Watt escaped further punishment. Rightly too. Wouldn’t be down to the fact he’s on loan from the Gooners would it? Or maybe, just maybe, we’re not quite as picked on by the Football League as some fans would have you think! Still, with the club potentially facing charges, our dear leader Bates, ever fighting for the Peacock’s cause, says ‘Well fight our corner!’

#07 – Grella is Premier League player…

As long as it’s the Blue Square Premier. He is outstanding at reserve or conference level – last season’s cup exploits when he was our extra time saviour or banging in two midweek for the reserves v Gateshead… but is he up to the rigours of the Championship? Perhaps he should stick to (alleged) online liaisons with strangers.

#08 – Sons of Scum are OK by us!

Kasper Schmeichel is already a fan favourite, after two outstanding displays. His reflexes and distribution have won us all over. That and his lovely blond hair. Alex Bruce seems remarkably popular for a man whose old fella played for that lot and has only made one appearance for us… maybe it’s the fact that he looks like he can run that has swayed the Leeds faithful?

#09 – Are we Arsenal in disguise?

First Sanchez Watt, now Henri Lansbury (allegedly). Does this mean we will start playing scintillating football, entertaining the neutrals, and failing gloriously? As long as we don’t swap Schmeichel for Almunia…

#10 – We don’t spend a huge amount on agents?

Compared to Premiership clubs, or Newcastle, or West Brom. But compared to Dagenham and Redbridge who spent a sum total of zero on fees for these parasites, we spend a fair whack. £335,723 last on agents last year made us the third highest spenders in League One. Seems like we spent less than that on transfer fees…

10 Things We Learnt From Leeds Utd. This Week

Posted on 13 August 2010 by paul

Taken From ‘The Scratching Shed’

#01 – Brian Clough still haunts us

Two decades since Leeds had lost on opening day came to an end as the ghost of Brian Clough returned in the form of a less wittier and more arrogant (I didn’t think it was possible either) mortal named Nigel.

#02 – Our defence is slower than time itself

A slug strenuously traipsing through a flowing stream of treacle couldn’t make the Leeds United defence look quick and agile. Worse still, somewhere between the months of May and August, Richard Naylor and co. forgot how to stick a foot in!

#03 – Keep off the grass

We learnt this week that kids are strictly forbidden from entering the Elland Road playground… I mean, playing field, even if they are the son of the holier-than-thou, Nigel Clough. We also learnt that Mr Clough doesn’t like being told what he can’t do and will run crying to the media when he doesn’t get his own way. Someone really needs a father figure… Oh wait…

#04 – Billy’s on his way back!

We learnt this week that Billy Paynter’s tummy-tuck operation… I mean, shin injury will keep him sidelined for ‘weeks not months’. Simon Grayson obviously has a keen eye for players fitness, noting that Billy is a “little” behind the rest of the squad in terms of physical condition.

#05 – Bates is a controversial so and so…

In a piece fitting for the fascist coalition of idiotic morons that makes up the Daily Mail, we learnt this week that Ken Bates doesn’t like foreigners owning English football clubs. A policy he’s always been keen on ever since he sold Chelsea to quintessential Englishman, Roman Abramovich.

“Come over here, steal all our football clubs…”

#06 – We know nothing

We learnt this week that despite the best efforts of the new Football League chairman, we’ll never find out the true owner of Leeds United (ahem… Bates). The illusive so and so just keeps finding loopholes in the historically bulletproof Football League rules.

#07 – We’re better than League Two!

We learnt this week that despite a disappointing opening day defeat at home to Derby County, we are better than your average League Two side. Lincoln City came, they saw, they folded as Leeds United practised ’keep away’ for 90 minutes, scoring four goals to curb the boredom.

#08 – Dizzee Rascal floorfillers for life

A new policy was brought in this week by the supporters of Leeds United football club, which states Sanchez Watt’s name should always be followed by a chorus of Dizzee Rascal. “You Watt, you watt?” Those that do not participate will be labelled non-fanatics. You have been warned.

#09 – Grella should not be f**ked with

We learnt this week that failure to play Mike Grella will result in severe warnings issued through the United States press. Three minutes at the end of each game should keep the friendly fire out of Elland Road for now.

#10 – The best things in life are free

Kasper Schmeichel and Lloyd Sam conclusively proved that the best things in life really are free. Still, “you can keep them for the birds and bees… now give me the money, that’s what I want…”

R.I.P. Adam Stansfield

Posted on 11 August 2010 by paul

It is with great sadness that the footballing world had to say goodbye to Exeter City’s 31 year old stiker Adam Stansfield.

Our thoughts at the moment are with Adam’s wife, family and friends.

A minutes silence is expected to be observed at all football grounds and matches in the Football League over the weekend.

Season Preview-Part Three-The Final Part

Posted on 07 August 2010 by paul

Today, as the final part of the season preview, I have interviewed Gary Edwards about Leeds’ chances this season, and the championship as a whole.

1) Who do you think Leeds’ key player will be this season?

* Becchio. And possibly Gradel and Watt.

2) Who do you think will win the Championship this season?

* Us of course! I dont think Reading and Forest will be far away either.

3) How do you think Leeds will do this season?

*I wasn’t that confident after the first few pre-season games in Slovakia and Bury, but they improved as they went on and after the Wolves performance, I think we’ll be ok once we are at full strength.

4) Out of all the players Leeds have signed, who do you think has been the best?

*Watt and possibly Bruce and Bessone. (Somma has impressed in pre-season too.)

5) How do you think is the best way for Leeds to play, the 4-5-1/4-3-3 system or the classic 4-4-2?

* The way the team is shaping up and provided Paynter comes thro ok I can see some kind of 4-4-2 being used. He’s got quite a few midfielders. And if Alan Smith does come (which I hope not) I think he will play in midfield too.

6) Out of the 3 teams that have come down from the Premier League, who do you think will do the best?

* Burnley should be strong.

7) And the worst?

* I think Portsmouth will struggle.

8) And finally, do you think Simon Grayson still needs to sign a striker?

* Definitely, without any doubt.
