UNITED HANDED FA CUP TRIP TO OLDHAM

Posted on 26 October 2009 by paul

Oldham 0809Leeds United have been drawn at Oldham Athletic in the first round of the FA Cup.

The tie will take place at Boundary Park during the weekend of November 7/8.

It will be the first of two meetings between Leeds and Oldham at Boundary Park in the space of a month with Simon Grayson’s men already due to make the trip across the Pennines in December.

The draw means United are without a scheduled weekend home game during the month of November.

Ticket information for the Oldham FA Cup trip will appear here later this week.

Well, 13 games so far and out of them we’ve won 9, drawn 3 and lost 1, with our first defeat coming yesterday at the hands of Millwall down at the Den. We just can’t win down there can we?!

Well, as I previously mentioned, Leeds suffered their first defeat of the season yesterday to the hands of our ‘old pals’ Millwall at the New Den. Millwall took the lead within 3 minutes through Neil Harris, the man who put Millwall ahead in the play-off semi-final first leg last season. Leeds went on to have a couple of chances after they scored, first with Jonny Howson forcing a good save from David Forde, then Robert Snodgrass had his follow up blocked by a Millwall defender, and the ball went out for a corner. A few corner-kicks later, Patrick Kisnorbo rifled the ball home after his original header was blocked. Even though a lot of Leeds fans had missed Neil Harris’ opener for Millwall, but they were all in the ground for the equaliser, and the vocal backing the Leeds fans gave to Simon Grayson and the team was amazing as ever. In the first 20 minutes both sides were hammering shots at both sides keepers and it was very entertaining for fans Millwallof both teams. The attendance for the game was 14, 165, this was Millwall’s biggist League attendance since November 2004. Nearly 2000 of these were Leeds fans, and the rest were probably thugs who fancied a fight. Towards the end of the match, Millwall started putting pressure on again, and they got a 2nd goal in the 83rd minute through Gary Alexander. The cross was put in, and Casper Ankergren could have gone for it, in fact, he barely had to move, the ball was right next to him nearly! But Alexander scored and it proved to be the goal that killed our unbeaten run. As the match came to an end, Tresor Kandol gave his ex team a severe scare by blasting a shot towards the Millwall goal, but it wasn’t to be as the ball cannoned off the crossbar and the match finished 2-1 to Millwall.

Anyway, the quicker we get over that the better! Today, the F.A Cup first round draw took place on ITV, and we were drawn away to Oldham. This means we will be avoiding the glitz and glammer of Paulton United or Tooting and Mitcham for at least 1 round anyway. The last time Leeds played Oldham, it was in the league at Boundary Park. We drew 1-1 after going 1-0 down to a Lee Hughes goal, and Luciano Becchio responded less than a minute later with a bullet header. Let’s hope we get more than a draw there this year, and if we do end up with a draw, lets hope they come to Elland Road for the replay and get slaughtered by us, like

what happened to Northampton last year, except we slaughtered them at their place instead!

On 16th October, Whitby Whites held their annual Leeds on the Road event, and it was a fantastic night as ever. Our guests for the evening were Peter Lorimer, Jonny Howson, Leigh Bromby, John McClelland and Brendan Ormesby. A range of questions came up, and the one everyone wanted to know came up, and that was who owns Leeds United? And it was obvious no-one knew! Jonny Howson was asked if a Premier League team came in for him, would he leave Leeds, and he officially announced that his intentions lie solely with Leeds. After 9pm, when Howson and Bromby had gone, the raffle was done by James Wales and Jane Smith and his models Graeme and Jeff. After that, Dave Boyes set up his disco, and Mif did his usual party piece, by doing his dance to Ace of Spades. In fact, there are 1 or 2 decent photo’s of his party piece in the Leeds on the Road photo album on the photo’s page of our website. I would just like to say a big thank you to-

  • Everyone who attended
  • Our Guests-Peter Lorimer, Jonny Howson, Leigh Bromby, John McClelland and Brendan Ormesby
  • Our Host-Stix Lockwood
  • Lorna Tinker for organising the event
  • Everyone who donated raffle prizes
  • And last but not least, the kitchen staff for the fantastic pie and peas.

Well, with the release of Football Manager 2010 this week, i’m going to look at the top 5 football games for this season, so here goes-

5. Championship Manager 2010-PC

After 2 years without a game, Championship Manager has returned with a total revamp. Now, there is much more for you to do, aswell as being able to set training schedules for you players, and creating match winning tactics, you can watch all your matches in 3D, with the new 3D match engine. You can also use this engine to watch your team in training matches and watching your team in a variety of drills based on shooting, passing, running etc. A totally different game to what were used to from Eidos, and this could be the start of something specail again for Championship Manager.

4. Pro-Evolution Soccer 2010-PS2, PS3, PSP, XBOX 360, PC, Nintendo Wii and Mobile Phones

Konami let it’s standards slip last year with Pro-Evolution Soccer 2009, even though the game’s graphics system was heads and shoulders above Fifa 09, but it was the all round game that let Konami down, and it isn’t much different this year. With not many licensed teams and leagues it’s hard to play as your favourite team if they are in the lower echelons of football. Also, Pro Evo doesn’t have as many game modes as Fifa 10, which again lets Konami down, a better game with more licenses next year please Konami!

3. FIFA Manager 10-PC

The demo for this game has really impressed me. The game is really well laid out and it has totally been based on improvements suggested by fans of the game, and something that looks as though it could be a huge hit is the new online mode that EA Sports have integrated into the game. This is the first time FIFA Manager has had an online mode and it’s looking good so far! Also now, manager’s can create fantastic modern stadiums to house their fans (imagine Elland Road transformed into a 90,000 all-seater stadium with all the latest state of the art technology, while Old Trafford has all the seats ripped out and all the stands replaced with grass stands and one toilet cubical that is located miles away from the ground!). You can also discuss tactics with individual players that will annoy the referee. Now, when your in the 3D match mode, you get shots of the managers in the dug-outs and in the technical area, shouting their heads off at their players! Another top game from EA Sports, they’ve done another fantastic job this year with the FIFA Manager franchise!

2. FIFA 10-PS2, PS3, PSP, XBOX 360, PC, Nintendo Wii, Nokia N-Gage, iPhone OS and Mobile Phones

As soon as we thought FIFA couldn’t get any better, it has! Instead of only being able to move in 8 different directions, you can now move in 360 different directions, and this is the first football game where you can do so. There have also been changes to the manager mode, EA Sports have fixed the bug where players like David Villa and Cesc Fabregas sign for teams like Accrington Stanley or Rotherham United. This now makes manager mode more realistic. Also, the graphics system has been revamped, making the graphics even better than last year, especially in HD. A game that is well worth splashing out on!

1. Football Manager 2010-PC

The game that leaves relationships in tatters! And it very much lives up to that again this year. Sports Interactive have never failed to deliver yet with the Football Manager series. The demo recently came out and it is fantastic, the improvements to the 3D match engine are brilliant, instead of having purple rectangles in the stands, there are seats, and even spectators! Also, the new data editor allows you to add countries that aren’t normally playable to the game, also you can add leagues to existing countries, or you can totally revamp a countries league system! Fantastic, fancy signing the best 5 players in Europe? Sorry, you can sign them, but you’re only allowed 3 of them in your match-day squad! So another great football manager game off the production belt, with actual fixtures aswell! BRING IT ON!

Well, another blog out of the way, and i’ll be back next weekend after the Bristol Rovers and Yeovil games, I will also be talking about my top 5 football matches ever!

Paul’s Blog-Long Time, No Blog!

Paul’s Blog-Long Time, No Blog!

Posted on 23 October 2009 by paul

Well, the blog is back after a break, and I have alot to talk about, so i’m going to get straight on with it.

A couple of weeks ago, our 100% league record went down at Southend, with the match ending in a 0-0 draw, luckily for us, that weekend Charlton Athletic drew, so we were still joint top of the league. Anyway, back to the Sarfend game. It was a bore draw really, neither team created many chances, and the 0-0 score showed that, one chance the had Leeds fans hearts in their mouths was the Lee Barnard penalty, which was given away by Leigh Bromby. Luckily for us, the almighty Shane Higgs pulled off a fantastic save, and kept us in the match at that point. To think, if it wasn’t for him we would have lost that game. Becchio’s face here sort of somes up the evening.

Becchio

As you can see, Becchio looks a bit fed up, and who can blame him, it was a boring match by all accounts, and it was also the end of our 100% record, but at least we were still unbeaten in all competitions.

After that match, Leeds United entertained Gillingham at Elland Road, and Scally’s scumbags came to Leeds very confident, and they had right to be, they had won their last 2 games in a row, but this was to be the end of their mini run, after they were crushed by the might of Leeds United, celebrationsand they succumbed to a 4-1 defeat, after 2 goals from goal machine Brad Johnson, a stunning volley from Jonny Howson, and a header from goal machine Jermaine Beckford. Another good win for Leeds and we left Scally looking very embarresed! Luvly Jubbly!

Next up, Liverpool came to Elland Road and took on Simon Graysons Barmy Army, and the Scousers, who supposedly create the best atmosphere in the country, but they only sang one song all night, and that was fields of Anfield Road, compared to our fans, who barely stopped singing all night. My man of the match from the night had to be Patrick Kisnorbo, he was winning everything in the air and on the ground. Also, Shane Higgs had a blinder of a night, keeping everything out of the net, well almost everything. Liverpool made a breakthrough in the 66th minute through David N’Gog, but we never stopped singing, and fair play to the Leeds players, they worked hard, and in all honesty, we deserved to win, but Liverpoolunfortunatly, we didn’t, and that’s the way it goes sometimes!

Next up, Leeds travelled to Milton Keynes, to take on Paul Ince’s MK Dons at Stadium:MK. This was a big game for both sides, MK Dons were looking to jump into the top 2 for the 1st time, and Leeds were looking to maintain their fantastic run. It was another eventful game for both sides, first, Jason Puncheon put a 2 footed, career threatening tackle in on Michael Doyle, and in retaliation, Robert Snodgrass smacked Dean Lewington in the back of the head, which, compared to Jason Puncheons 2 footed assault on Michael Doyle, is nothing. Predictably, Dons boss Paul Ince only saw one side of the story and branded Snodgrass ‘a disgrace’ before sheepishly conceding that Puncheon’s tackle deserved ‘something between a yellow and a red’.

MKDONS

In the absence of an orange card, we’ll have to take this to mean he believes that Puncheon should have stayed on and Snodgrass gone off. When you consider that the consequences of Puncheon’s actions could quite easily have been a broken leg for Doyle, it makes Snodgrass’ retaliation, petulant though it was, seem far less significant.

His justification for this? “I was sent off once in the Premier League for raising my hand to Niall Quinn.” Bravo, Paul. What do you want, a gold medal for saying “I tried to punch out the nicest man in football?”

Totally justified I think! Anyway, joking aside, Carlisle made the trip from Cumbria for our next match, and it was another boring match by all accounts. The game never really lit up, and the first bit of action came in the 29th minute when we got a penalty, and suprise suprise, Beckford missed, but he pounced on the rebound to put us 1-0 up. The rest of the match nothing much happened, until the 75th minute, when Carlisle’s Scott Dobie headed the ball in from a corner, then Leeds got going, but it was already too late, we weren’t going to score again, but at the end of the day, it’s a point, and with Charlton losing 3-0, we went 3 points ahead at the top of the league.

Next it was Charlton who travelled to Elland Road, and they also only managed a point out of us. When I saw Charlton’s line-up, I thought it was a reunion of our old players! There were no more than 4 ex-Leeds players in the Charlton line-up. Anyway, this was a game that was ruined by the wind, neither side could break the deadlock. It was a goalless draw, and neither side could really get their chances away. Leeds’ best chance came in the first half, and Charlton’s best Hugheschance came in the second. It was a game where we missed Snodgrass on the right side. He had picked up an injury in training and was unavailable for selection, as was Shane Higgs and Jason Crowe. But it was Snodgrass who we missed the most out of the 3. As the match went on, more injury concern came for Leeds. With about 30 minutes gone, one of our star strikers, Luciano Becchio went down injured, it looked serious, and according to sources, he could be out for as long as six months, who knows, I certainly don’t!.

Next, Darlington came to Elland Road for the Johnstones Paint Trophy, and it was another game in which Leeds didn’t play well. A couple of different faces were in the Leeds side, like new boy Davide Somma, who made the bench. But on the pitch, it was Andy Robinson and Tresor Kandol who did the talking on the pitch, both scoring fantastic goals, with Sean Convery scoring for Darlington on the stroke of half-time. After the match, something rare happened, with Simon Grayson coming out in public and criticising his players in public, but it was totally called for, as the manner that the players went about the win wasn’t the best! But at the end of the day, a win’s a win, and thats excatly what Leeds are doing at the minute.

leedsnorwich

The last match i’m going to talk about this week is Leeds vs. Norwich, which was on Sky Sports. The game was end to end, and the game had a very fast tempo. In the 16th minute, Leeds got a corner, Robert Snodgrass whipped it in and Bradley Johnson got his head on it at the far post and put it in for his 6th goal of the season. Then Norwich piled on the pressure, and Norwich eventually got an equaliser in the 38th minute through Grant Holt. They then piled on more pressure in the second half, until Max Gradel was introduced for Leeds, who gave Leeds an extra spark, they then pushed on, but Jermaine Beckford just couldn’t hit the target, until the 93rd minute, when the Norwich keeper, Fraser Forster, made a clanger and handed a goal to Jermaine Beckford, who happily put the ball in the net, the kop went wild and Jermaine Beckford got his 8th goal of the season.

Thats all really from this blog, but it’ll be back on Monday after the Millwall game, and i’ll be talking about this years Leeds On The Road.

COUNTING DOWN TO BACK THE BID

COUNTING DOWN TO BACK THE BID

Posted on 18 October 2009 by paul

Leeds United fans and the people of Leeds and the City Region are being asked to back the bid Leeds in the final weeks before the bid document is completed, which will determine whether or not Leeds will be a host city for the 2018 World Cup.

If Leeds is successful, the benefits to the City Region and the people in it will be massive, so here are five reasons why people should vote for the Leeds bid and bring the World Cup to our city:

· Major economic boost for local businesses generated by people staying and spending in the region
· Greater international visitor numbers and raising the international profile of Leeds as a destination to host major events
· Creation of a festival atmosphere for all the family to enjoy (it’s not all about football!)
· The opportunity to volunteer as Greeters welcoming our visitors and helping out at matches and team training sites
· The football legacy – benefiting all the City Region, using the game to engage with disadvantaged communities and include everyone in the football legacy

Back the Bid Leeds, which has been running since the summer, culminates in the bid document being presented to England 2018, established by the English Football Association to lead its bid to host the 2018 World Cup, in November. Votes have been coming in thick and fast but more are needed to demonstrate the support and enthusiasm the people of Leeds and the City Region have for the bid – and to ensure we are successful.

International Leeds fans are even backing the Leeds bid, with people as far and wide as Bulgaria, Guatemala, Iraq, Malta, Pakistan, Sweden, Thailand and the Ukraine voting for our city, so there’s no excuse for locals not to log on to www.backthebidleeds.com and vote! A text service is also available – supporters can vote for Leeds by texting ‘Leeds’ to 62018.

Leeds City Council, Leeds United and Marketing Leeds with the help of many other organisations, have been working hard on the bid to date, encouraging Leeds’ residents, community groups and businesses to get involved. Chants of ‘back the bid Leeds’ by the 120,000 visitors to Party in Park in July were supported by performers including JLS and Sophie Ellis-Bexter.

Leeds-Bradford Knitting & Crochet Guild are supporting the bid by helping to knit the world’s longest scarf, with a knitting pattern available on www.backthebidleeds.com so everyone can have a go, and an impressive city dressing campaign including signs on roundabouts and even banners on the side of buses has helped spread the message.

These sterling efforts have proved worthwhile, with the latest inspection visit from England 2018 on 7th September resulting in positive feedback. The quality and content of the preliminary bid was recognised, and the bid team was commended for their highly professional approach adopted during the visit, during which the public enjoyed a mini football festival in Millennium Square. However the number of votes also has a massive part to play in the decision made by England 2018, so voting for Leeds will have a significant impact on the result for our city.

Councillor Andrew Carter, Joint Leader of Leeds City Council added: “These final weeks are crucial if we are to be successful in being a host city for the 2018 world cup. This would provide a big boost to Leeds’ businesses and people in the City Region. The number of votes are an important part of the final bid document, so we encourage everyone who hasn’t already voted to do so.”

Shaun Harvey, chief executive of Leeds United said: “The support for Leeds so far has been amazing, but we need that support to be turned into votes – so log on to www.backthebidleeds.comor text Leeds to 62018 and help bring the World Cup to Leeds!”

Leeds is one of 16 cities across the country which have declared an interest in hosting World Cup fixtures in nine years time if the overall England bid is successful.

The bid is being prepared by Leeds City Council, Leeds United and Marketing Leeds with the help of many other organisations. If Leeds secures host city status, games would be played at Elland Road. It’s proposed that improvements would be made to the stadium so it would be capable hosting matches up to and including quarter finals.

GRIMSBY SET FOR ELLAND ROAD TROPHY TIE

GRIMSBY SET FOR ELLAND ROAD TROPHY TIE

Posted on 11 October 2009 by paul

Leeds United will play Grimsby Town in the Northern Area Quarter-Finals of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.

The clash against the Mariners, which will be played during the week commencing November 9, is United’s reward for beating Darlington 2-1 at Elland Road this week in the second round of the competition.

It will be the first competitive meeting between the two clubs for almost 12 years. The last time Grimsby visited Elland Road was in the FA Cup fourth round in 1998 when goals from Rob Molenaar and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink secured United a 2-0 win.

The two sides have met regularly in pre-season during recent times. Luciano Becchio was the goalscorer when United drew 1-1 at Blundell Park back in July.

The tie will mean an Elland Road return for former United midfielder Peter Sweeney who joined Grimsby Town on a permanent basis during the summer.

Ticket information will be available in due course.JPT

Football League asks Leeds United and Notts County to clarify ownership situations

Football League asks Leeds United and Notts County to clarify ownership situations

Posted on 09 October 2009 by paul

Bates

The Football League has asked Leeds United to clarify the ownership of the club after its board meeting today.

In a statement, the League noted “recent allegations” about the club, which refers to the Guardian’s discovery of an affidavit sworn by the Leeds chairman, Ken Bates, in which he admitted that he had made “an error” when he said in January that he jointly owned the club.

Bates had previously informed a court in Jersey that he and his long-term financial adviser, Patrick Murrin, each held one “management share” in Forward Sports Fund, the Cayman Islands-registered company that owns Leeds.

“The board noted recent allegations made about the ownership of Leeds United Football Club,” said the league board in a statement. “The league has written to the club seeking clarification. No further comment will be made on this matter until a response has been received.”

The league is also set to hold further meetings with representatives of Notts County to “clarify” their situation following Guardian investigations into the club’s mysterious ownership structure. Although some submissions have been made from Meadow Lane, the league will still seek to discuss in more detail what has been handed over.

“We are very grateful to Notts County for providing us with further information in regard to its ownership structure,” read the statement. “Meetings to clarify a few outstanding issues will occur during the next few days, with a view to concluding matters in the near future.”

Flavio Briatore, the Queens Park Rangers director-shareholder who has been banned for life from any involvement in Formula One, will also be asked for more details about his situation. The Italian is considering an appeal against the judgement handed down by the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile last month and the league cannot act decisively until that has been determined.

“The Board conducted a comprehensive review of the situation, including the receipt of advice from leading counsel,” read the statement. “After considering all the information presently available to it and in the interest of due process, the Board will seek responses from Mr Briatore before commenting further.”

We have booked the Whitby Whites Rugby Club for this years Leeds On The Road for Friday 16th October. This has been agreed with Lorna Tinker at Leeds United. We don’t have a match on that weekend as we play Norwich City at home on the Monday night (this is also in front of the Sky cameras) so we should hopefully get a couple of first teamers. Details of ticket prices and start time will be on the website sometime this week.
